Christmas: it’s the most wonderful time of the year! Or so they say. Spare a thought for those still stuck at work over the holidays.
Now, of course, there are the standard professions that are required (ish) to work over Christmas – hospitals, emergency services, retail – and without them, the country would almost certainly fall apart. But what about those of us who are spending Christmas Eve, New Year’s, and the days in between, in an office. I mean, realistically, what work is happening in an office setting on Christmas Eve?
Well, as I sit in the office of 6 workers, I can tell you – not much. So far we’ve had spam calls, cold-calls and wrong-numbers. So, it begs the question – is it really worth having us all in the office, when every other corporate business is closed down? Theoretically, yes, just in case a potential customer calls in. But in reality, there’s no business to be had here.
In fact, as a business-to-business company, all our clients are closed for Christmas, so it feels strange to have the sales department in at all!
All I can say is that the company, much less Britain, would decidedly not fall apart if we weren’t working today. But for some reason, corporations have decided that we should. That we should not be afforded a day off to be with our families, when ever potential client is doing just that. It’s a strange decision that working-Britain has made, to make workers work when they’re really not needed, but it can’t be helped. Or at least, not by us.
So spare a thought for us office workers, still working, in almost deadly silence, just watching the clock, waiting for the call that will never come. Because this Christmas, I’m no use to anyone – not my clients who don’t need me, and not my family who actually might. But alas, here we are, working hard (hardly working), waiting for the phone to ring, and watching the minutes tick slowly by.
