Scientific evidence is suggesting that the rise in burnout, especially amongst young professionals, is closely linked to the idea of the “side hustle”. With many millennials exposed to entrepreneurs and influencers on social media, there is a higher level of pressure to create content or build an empire alongside working for an employer.
For those of us who are looking to create content and work to support ourselves while doing so, I’ve put together my tips on how you avoid burning out too early.
Set Boundaries

Setting clear boundaries for where and when you’re going to work is the first step to the Side Hustle. Have a separate space at home where you work on your ideas and content, and stick to set timings. Allow yourself time to unwind before bed, and don’t let yourself skip meals to work on your business.
Set Tangible Goals
It’s no use setting goals in the far-off future. Well, it is, but you have to celebrate the small wins in order to keep your sanity. Set small, achievable goals so that you can measure your success tangibly.
Get Plenty of Rest
Sleep is golden. Getting enough sleep allows you to recharge and means you tackle the new day totally fresh. The sleep can also give you a new perspective when you wake up, looking over any challenges with a fresh set of eyes.
Eat Well, Drink Well
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your mind alert, and make sure that you’re eating healthily enough that you don’t feel groggy all the time. Coffee helps, but water and fresh food is essential. Plenty of fruits and veggies to keep yourself healthy, active and alert.
Positive Vibes Only
Surround yourself with people who will support you, and encourage you to pursue this. At the same time, try to keep a positive mindframe, reminding yourself of how far you’ve come, and where you plan to be.

Please do remember that these suggestions apply to your daily job too, and you shouldn’t feel the pressure to build a business in a side hustle if that isn’t what will make you happy. Ultimately, burnout is happening because millennials are trying to do too many things. There’s nothing wrong with stopping to smell the flowers once in a while. Do what will make you happy, not what will look good on social media. #YouDoYou
